True Disciples

So Jesus said to those Jews who had believed in Him, If you abide in My word [hold fast to My teachings and live in accordance with them], you are truly My disciples. And you will know the Truth, and the Truth will set you free. John 8:31-32 AMP.

It seems that in today’s society, there are a lot of people who have prayed the sinner’s prayer and invited Jesus into their heart, but they have never really been discipled. A disciple is one who is learning to become like their teacher. As the verses in John state, discipleship requires abiding (living in vital communion with) God’s word and maintaining a personal, ongoing relationship with Christ. Then, Jesus said, “you will know the truth and the truth will set you free.” A lot of people continue to live in bondage to sin, addictions, etc. because they do not continue to learn and apply God’s word to their lives or they do not walk in obedience to what they know.

I was recently very blessed when a young man that attended the classes I taught on spiritual warfare and deliverance shared with me that he was now leading a small group for men. He told me that a couple of the men had been having nightmares. I said, well you need to have them pray a prayer of repentance for any doors they might have opened to a spirit of fear through watching scary movies, listening to the wrong kind of music, occult activities, etc. and then take authority over the spirit of fear. He said “I did, I did it just the way you taught me.” I said, well did you ask them if they had any more bad dreams? He said “Yes and they said, not since we prayed.” This so thrilled my heart that I was able to pass on to someone else the principles I had learned and he was using it to help others get free.

It reminded me of the verse in II Timothy that says:

And the [instructions] which you have heard from me along with many witnesses, transmit and entrust [as a deposit] to reliable and faithful men who will be competent and qualified to teach others also. II Timothy 2:2 AMP.

That’s what discipleship is all about teaching and training others who will carry on the ministry. God bless you all.
